Preliminary study of an aircraft is a time-consuming, often highly complex operation, requiring analysis of microscopic details that will often go into macroscopic parts. Among our activities, we constantly engage in applied engineering activities in the aircraft industry: in addition to the virtual and augmented reality laboratory, which we inaugurated last year, we also perform RAMS analysis.

What is a RAMS analysis?

RAMS is first and foremost an acronym that brings together the English termsReliability,Availability,Maintenability, andSafety. Going into more detail,Reliability is the probability that a system or device will maintain its performance unchanged over time. Reliability is determined by the failure rate, which is the number of failures that occur in a component in a given time interval. Availability, on the other hand, is the percentage of time a system or facility remains operational, without interruption. Closely related to availability is maintainability, defined as the probability of performing a repair on a failed system, again within a previously determined time: the lower this value, the more “maintainable” a tool or system is. Safety, finally, is a value that is very close to the Italian meaning of the term, being the probability of a dangerous event happening to people or the surrounding environment. To determine the safety of a system or machinery, there are a number of risk assessment techniques and systems. The RAMS analysis is, in short, a set of assessments to be made at a preliminary stage, measured according to unambiguously detectable values, which gives an overall picture of the feasibility of a design or the advisability of any renovation of a system. When applied to aircraft design, this can often be time-consuming, as is easily imaginable, but the results avoid wasted time and (most importantly) safety flaws in design and production. At PRO S3, as mentioned earlier, we have also been involved in RAMS analysis since our early years: click here to contact us and request more information.
