Fixed-wing and multirotor drones are the two types currently most popular for numerous measurement activities in different fields: mainly remote sensing and aerophotogrammetry, but not only.

What, then, are the differences between fixed wing and multirotor?

Thefixed-wing, which, as the name suggests, exploits the principle of lift generated by fixed surfaces, just like an airplane, has among its main advantages that of flight duration. In addition to the length of time that a fixed-wing drone can remain in the air without the need to land, other advantages include the distance that can be achieved in a single flight, and the ability to land without suffering damage in the event of power loss. In contrast, fixed-wing drones cost more on average than multirotor d rones and need large areas free of obstacles to take off and land. Fixed-wing drones, therefore, are better suited for surveys of very large areas without large obstacles, requiring more flight time. In contrast, multirotor drones, although penalized by lower range and flight speed, feature wide versatility, thanks to the ability to take off and land vertically, as well as fly fixed-point. Unlike fixed-wing drones, multirotor drones are better suited for operations in confined spaces, in the presence of obstacles, whenever conventional takeoff and landing areas are not available. They are perfect for relief in tighter spaces (and in less extensive areas). Both fixed-wing and multirotor have their merits and demerits-why not combine the best of both types in one platform with a hybrid solution, such as ICON V2, our versatile, high-performance drone. Featuring highly sophisticated electronics, ICON V2 can switch from fixed-point to translational flight (and vice versa) with the flip of a switch. Of course, ICON V2, like our other products, is also set up for automatic flight and is available in two versions: Mapper and Sar. The Mapper is designed for visible and multispectral aero-photogrammetry missions, while SAR (Search And Rescue ) is ideal for search and rescue missions, as well as surveillance oflarge areas and borders. For all other information, technical details and to book a demo you can visit the page on our website dedicated to ICON V2.
